New hope for better flu vaccines

Australian scientists have discovered three specific white blood cells which play a key role in determining whether a person responds well to flu vaccines, a breakthrough that could lead to better protection against future deadly strains of the virus. Best-case vaccine effectiveness is around 60 per cent, however efficacy was much lower during the 2017 flu season. A study analysed blood samples taken from healthy people who got the flu shot in 2014, 2015 and 2016. It was found in the best responders to the flu vaccine there were three specific types of white blood cells recruited by the immune system to fight the virus. These were T follicular helper cells, antibody-secreting cells and memory B cells. The "exciting" discovery has raised hope of significantly more effective vaccines.

Researchers May Have the Answer to Preventing Future Flu Outbreaks

The Columbia University Irving Medical Center may have found a way to very simply halt the flu virus’ spread. Researchers at the university have found that far ultraviolet C light (far-UVC) is lethal to the flu, while not being harmful to human tissue. If confirmed, this could severely diminish people’s exposure to the flu in public places.

Key Results - Study of children with neurologic disorders (n=184,460), their siblings (n=204,960), and a general pediatric sample (n=4,697,486). Epilepsy was the most common disorder (136,240 person-years [74%] with isolated epilepsy). Overall, 34.6% of children with neurologic disorders vs 28.1% siblings or 23.8% of general pediatric population were vaccinated (P<.01). Vaccination was lowest among children with epilepsy (30.9%). Vaccination coverage in children with neurologic disorders increased from 22.4% (2006-2007) to 42.3% (2013-2014), but declined with age and was lowest in children aged 10-17 years.

Study shows youngest kids most at risk of flu death

A new analysis of seasonal flu deaths in US children in the six seasons that followed the 2009 H1N1 pandemic reveals that children ages 2 and younger are most at risk, and of children who died, less than a third had been vaccinated against the disease. Researchers said some of the main messages from the study are the need to improve flu vaccination coverage in children and that prompt antiviral treatment should be given, especially in young children, those with underlying illness, and those who hare hospitalized with suspected flu.

Scientists inch closer to universal flu vaccine as virus wreaks havoc on North America

Studies suggest that one of the most promising routes to achieve a universal flu vaccine is to create a vaccine that targets the “stalk” of the protein that covers the flu virus. A study by University of Rochester Medical Center in conjunction with researchers around the world noted that the stalk too can change, though this strategy would provide protection for a longer period of time. To eventually achieve universal protection, however, countries need to prioritize research on the issue. Several parties, including the U.S. National Institute of Health, global non-profits such as PATH and pharmaceutical companies are currently funding clinical trials for universal flu vaccines.

Far-UVC Light Takes Out Airborne Flu Viruses

Researchers from the Columbia University Medical Center have discovered that continuous low doses of far ultraviolet C (far-UVC) light can kill airborne flu viruses without harming human tissues. “If our results are confirmed in other settings, it follows that the use of overhead low-level far-UVC light in public locations would be a safe and efficient method for limiting the transmission and spread of airborne-mediated microbial diseases, such as influenza and tuberculosis,” study leader David Brenner said.

As part of ongoing efforts to battle the flu, a University of Georgia researcher is working to develop a universal vaccine. “The two different goals for a broadly protective or universal flu vaccine involve being able to protect you against all the circulating strains in any given season,” said Dr. Ted Ross. “Then if you can expand that and do that over multiple different years, so now you can take one flu shot and then it will go maybe five years or 10 years, and still be protected against all the different versions, that’s a great improvement over how we’re doing it now.”

Ross and his team have been working on a universal vaccine for about a decade. They've had successful trials in mice and ferrets. Detailed Study of Flu Genome May Help Efforts to Detect Potential Pandemic

Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis say they have identified features of the influenza virus genome that affect how well the virus multiplies. The team believes its findings ("Nucleotide Resolution Mapping of Influenza A Virus Nucleoprotein–RNA Interactions Reveals RNA Features Required for Replication”), could help improve surveillance to detect a potential pandemic. The features that were identified are similar, but not identical, across viral strains. It's possible that the extent of similarity between strains influences whether two flu viruses can mix their genetic material to make a hybrid virus with the potential to explode into pandemic flu, according to the scientists.

According to a recently-published study in PLOS One, a newly developed DNA vaccine could lead to eventual 1-dose universal protection. The vaccine, developed by University of Washington researchers, is administered through the epidermis via a “gene gun” device, injecting the vaccine directly into the skin cells. The DNA vaccine is different from currently-used vaccines because it seeks out infected cells and kills them, prompting the receiver’s own skin cells to fight the infection, rather than simply repelling the virus.
