My toddler was so sick with the flu. Here's why I think he survived.

In recent flu seasons, 4 in 5 children who died of the flu hadn’t been vaccinated — and that’s almost certainly not a coincidence. Research shows vaccination helps reduce the risk of healthy children dying from the flu by two-thirds. While the best time to get the vaccine is in September or October before flu season begins in earnest, public health and medical experts continue to stress it’s not too late to get a flu shot.

The Flu Shot Is More Effective For Kids, New Study Finds, So Parents Should Get Them Vaccinated ASAP

In the U.S., speculation that the flu vaccine might be less effective this season has proven to be correct, but at least it is more effective for kids. The vaccine's overall effectiveness is 36 percent, but it varies significantly by age group. Children 6 months to 8 years old are experiencing 59 percent effectiveness, whereas the effectiveness for adults 18 to 49 is 33 percent.

CDC: Most Children Dying From Flu Not Vaccinated

In the U.S., as in the past, most children who have died of the flu so far this season had not been vaccinated, according to the CDC. Of the 63 confirmed child deaths from the flu, investigators have health histories on 56 of them. Of the 54 kids who were old enough to get the flu vaccine, only 14 -- or 26% -- had gotten at least one dose. In a separate study, the CDC said that early numbers showed the flu vaccine was more effective for kids than for adults this year, cutting their chances of needing to see a doctor for severe symptoms by more than half.

Influenza Deaths in Children: Putting It Into Context

Julia Sammons, pediatric infectious disease physician and medical director of the Department of Infection Prevention and Control at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, writes to put the news about influenza deaths in children into perspective. Over 80% of children who die related to flu are unvaccinated, and the data so far this season seem to be similar. Again, that message is important to drive home. Influenza vaccine remains our best means for prevention, and it's still not too late to get the influenza vaccine.

Why it's been such a tough flu season for children

More children are ending up in hospital for flu-related illnesses as two types of influenza hit Canada at once, according to a new report. This week's FluWatch report from the Public Health Agency of Canada says that overall flu activity is at its peak levels. Several flu viruses are circulating, including a type called influenza B that tends to hit children hard. Canadian public health officials now have preliminary data on flu vaccine effectiveness, which suggests it is about 55 per cent effective against influenza B.

Young Kids Are Getting The Best Protection From Current Flu Vaccine

In the U.S., the CDC figures that, overall, the flu vaccine is 36% effective at preventing disease. One bright point for parents of young kids: Children ages 6 months to 8 years responded significantly better to the vaccine than older Americans. The CDC scientists also note that a person's immune response to a vaccine depends in part on age, vaccination history and previous infections. That could explain why children have been responding better to this season's vaccine. The risk of serious illness in the 6 months to 8 years age group was reduced by 59 percent among children who were infected with the H3N2 strain.

In the U.S., since reporting became mandatory after the high-severe flu season of 2003-04, yearly pediatric influenza deaths have ranged from a low of 35 during the 2011-2012 flu season to a high of 282 during the 2009—2010 H1N1 pandemic. As tragic as the 2009 pandemic tally was, the CDC estimated that the number of pediatric deaths in the United States probably ranged from 910 to 1880, or anywhere from 3 to 6 times higher than reported. Even during non-pandemic seasons, the CDC believes the officially reported numbers likely understate the true number of pediatric deaths due to influenza by half.

Elsa Viora, president of the Italian hospital obstetric gynecologists association.(AOGOI) said "The classic flu symptoms, such as joint pain, headache, cold, cough, phlegm and fever, if left uncontrolled, do not involve specific risks for the fetus, but you need to pay particular attention in the case of respiratory symptoms and if your temperature rises too high. This means that the risk lay in the physiological decline of the immune defenses, a fact which exposes pregnant women more to the risk of developing complications such as pneumonia, while a high fever could cause the appearance of contractions of the uterus and induce premature labor, with possible risks to the health of the newborn

Should the Flu Vaccine be Required for School?

In the U.S., even if the flu shot is easy to get and free, some people still will not get it, for a variety of reasons. Since, public schools already require vaccinations for MMR, polio, etc. in order to allow a student to come to school - why not add influenza to the list? More children will die of the flu this year in the United States than of polio and measles combined (zero). So, does it make sense to have some vaccines mandatory for school entry and leave the flu up to the parents' discretion?

Widespread flu causes shortage of children's flu medicine

South Carolina has had six weeks of widespread influenza across the state as of last week, and medical suppliers are starting to feel the brunt of the demand. Pharmacies in the Southeast have been experiencing shortages in flu medicine for children from wholesale suppliers because of increased demands. Tamiflu costs about $150 and most insurance companies don’t cover it, but Medicaid has announced it will cover the brand because of widespread shortages.

Can Tamiflu Cause Children to Become Homicidal?

Psychiatric problems are possibly associated with the anti-influenza drug Tamiflu, but causation and association are difficult to tease apart. Linking this broad range of psychiatric outcomes causally to Tamiflu, though, is problematic for scientists researching the drug’s safety. That’s because because influenza can cause similar effects on its own, and because Tamiflu is rarely the only drug a flu sufferer takes throughout the course of their illness.

Can the Influenza Vaccine Prevent Acute Otitis Media?

Acute otitis media (AOM) is common among children in high-income countries, with an estimated 80% of children experiencing at least 1 episode by the time they reach 3 years of age. A study looked at evidence pertaining to the effectiveness of flu vaccines in preventing AOM in infants and children, and found that "vaccination may confer modest reductions in AOM and AOM-targeted antibiotic use,” said Dr Lauterbach. Promotion of the influenza vaccine as a strategy to reduce AOM is likely unjustified, although the review authors stated that “many factors… influence parents' decisions whether or not to vaccinate their child,” and they may want to consider these results in making such decisions.

About 77,500 influenza vaccine doses were brought to Estonia this season, although the initial vaccine manufacturers' plan predicted that 63,000 doses would be enough for the entire season. However, stocks were gone by the end of October
