Health Care Workers Often Work Despite Illness
Hospitals and other health care organizations invest untold resources in their ever-present battle against health care-associated infections, but new research suggests there’s one risk health care workers routinely downplay: themselves. A study released this summer found 95% of ill health care workers reported working at least 1 day while symptomatic. The research is based on thousands of illness diaries by health care workers at 9 Canadian hospitals during 4 flu seasons between 2010 and 2014. Sophia Chiu, MD, Medical Office in the Division of Field Studies and Engineering, at the U.S. CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health told Contagion that the CDC also found high numbers of health care workers work while ill. That survey, of 1900 health care workers, found 40% reported working while experiencing flu-like symptoms during the 2014-15 flu season.
Virtual reality can boost flu vaccination rates
Virtual reality could help flu vaccination rates, according to a new study which finds that virtual reality could provide a path to increased acceptance of the influenza shot. This finding is based on a study undertaken at the University of Georgia, where a virtual reality simulation was used to demonstrate how influenza spreads. Through this the impact of the virus on others in a population was shown. The aim of the simulation was to see if this would encourage more people to get a flu shot. Based on the success of the trial, the researchers think the application of virtual reality offers a practical way forwards.

The district says the requirements are an “erosion of parental rights.” Several school districts also question the overall effectiveness of flu vaccines.

Health Ministry Transfers 45000 Flu Shots in Effort to Meet Surging Demand
In Israel, following reports of three fatalities and many other serious cases from the flu in recent days, the surge in demand for vaccinations has the Health Ministry scrambling to keep up. According to Channel 12, as of Monday the country had only two days more of vaccination stockpiles left, while the ministry waits for resupply. Health officials said they were transferring some 45,000 vaccines to the three major health funds — Clalit, Meuhedet and Leumit—to be available as of Tuesday. Around 1.8 million Israelis have been vaccinated against the flu this season, many of them for the first time.

Israelis turning to health maintenance organizations (HMOs) to receive flu vaccines said on Sunday they were being turned down due to shortages of influenza shots to combat a strain proving more harmful than those of previous years.
Opinion: When border officials brought in a detained child with flu, our hospital faced a dilemna
Donna Woods is an emergency medicine physician at Tucson Medical Center. Dona Kim Murphey is director of health initiatives for Project Lifeline. They write that 'Physicians have grown increasingly concerned in recent months about the state of health care in migrant detention facilities, particularly for children. Earlier this month, the two of us had a firsthand look at one part of the problem.' 'The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that migrants over the age of 6 months be given flu vaccinations “at the earliest point of entry.” But immigration officials have refused to do so. This makes no sense, especially given the kind of severely overcrowded conditions in which many migrants are held. Such conditions create a perfect environment for the spread of communicable diseases'

In Ireland, HSE Midlands is warning that the risk of flu is still serious for certain members of the public. 18 flu-related deaths have been reported so far this winter - with more expected. NHS England data shows that 228,348 people were eligible for free flu vaccines in Worcestershire last winter – but only 65% of them had one.
Influenza A Virus Could Soon Begin Picking Up
The presence of influenza A is slowly picking up across the United States, says Dr. Bryan Lewis, a professor at the University of Virginia, according to Accuweather. Lewis doesn't know for certain when the type A strain will begin surging, but he suspects that it will begin making its influence felt near late December. Influenza B can be a menace, especially for kids; however, it tends to cause less hospitalizations and deaths than Influenza A. Regardless of how Influenza A comes on, it's safe to say that the 2019-2020 flu season will be the third straight to display negative features. The 2017-2018 flu season featured recording-breaking hospitalizations and the 2018-2019 flu season was longer than average.
